Great Congo Demonstration Commemorative Event

On the 19th of November 1909, the Royal Albert Hall was host to the Great Congo Demonstration.  Led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, a group of politicians, artists and faith leaders stood up in protest against the deplorable violence taking place in the Congo.  One hundred years later to the day, the Royal Albert Hall once again opened its doors to a demonstration against severe and grave violence.  A new phase of conflict has seized the Democratic Republic of Congo with women at the forefront of the suffering.  This commemorative demonstration welcomed the emergence of a new movement which takes inspiration from the successful 1909 campaign to help to release the people of the Congo from the brutality of their oppressors.

                   Judith Wanag

The current Archbishop of Canterbury supported this event which had both historical and current relevance.  Politicians, celebrities, advocates, journalists and multi-faith leaders, gathered together again to inform themselves of the horrors taking place right now and to gather ideas of what they can do to help end the suffering.  The assembled crowd listened to speeches which were at times startling, inspiring, disturbing and rousing.

The attending crowd was a diverse mix of faiths and nationalities but they were all powerfully united in opposition against rape and violence in the DRC.  The speakers, introduced by Lynne Franks and Sandi Toksvig included Rev. Rachel Carnegie, the Bishop of Winchester, Christine Deschryver;  director of the City of Joy in Bukavu,  Judith Wanga a young Congolese woman who grew up in North London but has recently made the trip back to her homeland on an eye-opening factfinding mission, Eric Joyce MP, Baroness Trish Morris, Rev. Lucienne Mabiala Franque and Eve Ensler; founder of V-Day and author of the Vagina Monologues.  The speakers who each approached the subject from their unique perspectives all concluded that the current situation cannot continue and that we all have a part to play in bringing it to an end.

              Rabbi Rebecca Qassim Birk

When the speakers finished, the audience collected action packs and information to take forward the campaign once the event ended.  As different multi-faith leaders conversed with each other and with the diverse assembled crowd it was clear that there was power in their unity.  As Christine Deschryver emphasised in her speech, we cannot leave the room and forget what we have heard about the Congo.  The women of the Congo cannot walk away and forget so we must stand with them and work to bring an end to rape in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This event was the first event under the umbrella of Congo Now - an international campaign that unites a coalition of more than 20 of the UK’s biggest NGOs plus UK parliamentarians. The campaign combines British and Congolese voices to demand an end to the world's worst humanitarian crisis - and action to address its underlying causes and consequences. The campaign will reach a climax in June and July 2010, when the DRC celebrates 50 years of independence.  Please take a moment to visit their website www.congonow.org and sign up to the newsletter for bulletins on their national campaign.
