Vday

In 1998 V-Day was born out of Eve Ensler's award-winning play The Vagina Monologues. The play is used as the focus of V-Day events. As the performance toured, Eve was approached by women who told her their stories of abuse. There were hundreds of women, and hundreds of stories. As Eve listened, she realised that something needed to be done.

In 1998 V-Day was born. A vision, a movement, a performance.

The campaign quickly spread to the UK, with a 1999 Valentines Day performance of The Vagina Monologues kick-starting V-Day UK. This production raised £360,000 for National and International charities and was the first ever V-Day in Europe and only the second in the world.

Within four years, Tender (formerly known as ‘Until the Violence Stops') was set up to inspire V-Day campaigns in universities and communities across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. In the same year, Tender spear-headed the V-Day Europe network, strengthening and inspiring work across the continent.

This work gives women a global voice, raises awareness in their communities and distributes funds to grassroots, national and international organisations that work to stop violence against women and girls.
